West Marin is, debatably, the most spectacular region in a county known for its scenic wonders. A truly rural section of Marin encompassing miles of open ridge tops, wild coast lines, and pastoral dairy farms, West Marin contains the Point Reyes National Seashore, Point Reyes Bird Observatory, Audobon Canyon Ranch, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area making almost all of this region protected. These parks act as a guarantee against any further urbanization. With the exception of Inverness, which is on the Point Reyes Peninsula, the coastal towns of West Marin are scattered along Highway One all the way up to the Marin/Sonoma County border. The unique, small inland hamlets of Nicasio, Woodacre, Forest Knolls, San Geronimo and Lagunitas are varied environments ranging from redwood forests to open grasslands and rolling hills. West Marin's towns remain as islands
of private property with each having its own unique charm and character, dating back to the 19th century, beginning as natural resorts, or lumber and agricultural centers.
